Aadhaar card and PIO/OCI/NRIs

Consulate has been repeatedly approached by Non Resident Indians (NRI’s) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI’s) on question of linking Aadhaar details with Bank Accounts/PAN Cards and or for getting Mobile/Gas connections etc. Government of India once again clarifies:

Aadhaar enrolment is permissible only in case of a Resident who has resided in India for a period of 182 days or more in the twelve months immediately preceding the date of enrolment.

Accordingly, NRIs/PIOs/OCIs may not be eligible for Aadhaar enrolment as per the Aadhar Act. Aadhaar as an Identity document may be sought only from those who are eligible for it.

Section 7 of the Aadhaar Act., provides that “if an Aadhaar number is not assigned to an individual, the individual shall be offered alternate and viable means of identification for delivery of subsidy, benefit or service".
